What NOT to Do

The absolute worst decision is to do nothing. Commercial / Industrial HVAC units are commonly disregarded by the Mechanical Contractor without consideration to the environment. Although, most contractors are certified to remove refrigerant, very few complete the pump down as required due to the time, cost, etc. A typical 10 ton HVAC unit can take up to 1 hour to discharge properly. In addition, this process allows the mechanical contractor to sale the equipment to the highest bidder. Once sold the equipment is placed in a salvage yard for demolition by uncertified personnel. In most cases the salvage yard punctures the compressors and coils to relieve unclaimed refrigerant violating the EPA Clean Air Act.

A study performed by a large national retailer in 2008 (200+ projects) revealed no cost increase from implementing this program. In fact, the results prove not only to be environmentally sound, but cost effective. Since inception, we have banked more than 100,000 lbs of R-22 refrigerant. The current savings for 2009 on Reclaimed-Banked is 4.00 per pound.
